Introducing the Suritto Lamp

In designing my first table lamp, I wanted to create something that was unique as compared to "wave" or "origami" style 3D-printed lamps that have become so common in the market, and look to more local sources for inspiration.

This was the simplest hongbao "lantern" we made in school.

The Suritto Lamp (suritto means "slits" in Japanese) is inspired by the lanterns that I used to make out of red packets ("hongbao" or 红包) for Chinese New Year classroom decorations while I was in school. My form teacher would ask everyone to contribute some hongbao, and we would spend a period of class (or sometimes stay back after school) to make these lanterns together as a class.


Among the various types of lanterns we made, the simplest one could be made with just one hongbao, using a pair of

scissors and a stapler.


The Suritto Lamp is designed with 8 slits, with a red top and base in a nod to the hongbao that I used to make the lanterns as a student, complete with a handle to make the lamp portable!


I hope that the Suritto lamp adds some warmth, as well as a splash of colour and playfulness to your home!


Designer's Notes:


I wanted to replicate the slits in the paper, with the folds in the middle of each strip, and I decided to make the lamp shade with 8 slits, as that would make each slit wide enough for the light to shine through.

I initially modeled the entire lamp shade as a single piece, but this was not possible to 3D-print as the part became too unstable nearing the top.


So, I decided to print each of the 8 "strips" individually, and assemble them together using 2 rings at the top and bottom of the lamp shade to hold them together. This made the lamp easier to print, with lower failure rates and filament wastage, as I did not have to throw away the entire lamp shade if 1 strip did not print properly, but could just reprint another strip and keep the rest of the lamp shade.


The final design requires more work to assemble, but reduces the print failure rate, making it worthwhile.
